What to do in Marion and Mullins

by Beth Williams

Hideaway Haven is located in Marion County within short driving distances of Marion and Mullins. Both towns have impressive historic districts featuring refurbished buildings and antebellum mansions that date back to the late 1800s. Marion and Mullins offer men’s and women’s clothing boutiques and specialty gift stores, but they are especially known for their numerous antique shops.

Marion is a town that’s full of small-town charm (www.co.marion.sc.us). The National Register Historic District can be enjoyed on a self-guided or guided walking tour, which can be arranged through the Chamber of Commerce (843-423-3561). The Marion Museum is housed in a circa 1886 red brick school house that is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. It is open Tuesday through Friday and admission is free (843-423-8299).

Nature lovers are drawn to the pristine dark waters of the Little Pee Dee River, which can be toured by canoe or kayak through two local outfitters in Marion: Betwixt the Rivers Outfitters (843-423-1919) and Rms Sports (843-423-6790). Both companies offer day and overnight trips. Neither have set schedules; reservations must be made in advance.

The South Carolina Tobacco Museum in Mullins, open Monday through Friday year round, is located in a portion of the town’s historic train depot (www.mullinssc.us). Tours of Mullins historic district, which includes lunch and a tour of the Tobacco Museum, can be arranged by calling 800-207-7967. Well-known home cooking style buffets, popular with locals and visitors alike, are served at O’Hara’s (123 East Wine Street, 843-464-7287) and Webster’s Manor (115 East James Street, 843-464-9632).
