What to do while you are in Folly Beach

by Mary Ann Hester

The Lost Dog: A Great Place to Find Breakfast
Every town needs a Lost Dog style hang out where tourists and locals are welcomed as old friends and loitering over your food is acceptable. Seating is inside and out, and of course, dogs are welcome. Their breakfast burrito and Lost Dog’s own huevos rancheros are two very popular items but then there are the homemade muffins and fresh fruit parfait that are equally well liked. The coffee is endless and as good as is the service. The Lost Dog is located at 106 West Huron ( right off Center Street) and is open from 6:30am to 3pm, with take out available.

The Folly Beach Crab Shack: Colorful Seafood and Atmosphere
For beach music, buckets of good food and margaritas, this is the place. With its outdoor deck, sunburned locals and tourists come here for a relaxing time. With all the requisite fishing nets, buoys, banana palms and Jimmy Buffet in the background, you know you are at the beach. The low-country style seafood sampler of mussels, clams, oysters, snow crab legs, corn, potatoes, and sausage swimming in broth are a favorite. And you have to love any place that advertises on its wine list that “we may serve our wines in plastic but they still taste fantastic.” The Crab Shack is located at 26 Center Street and is open from 11am-10pm with a night and raw bar menu after 10pm.

The Holiday Inn
At the end of Center Street, right on the beach is the Holiday Inn which has been in Folly Beach for years. Showing its age, its location is still perfect and the staff does everything to make your stay pleasant. The in-room small refrigerators and microwaves make it convenient for families and their coffeemakers are stocked with Seattle’s Best. Small balconies, clean beds, HBO and room service complete the package. The best part is their location on the beach and near all the restaurants and stores on Center Street.

Folly Beach Fishing Pier
Over a thousand feet long, the Edwin S. Taylor fishing pier is a hot spot in the summer with grill, tackle and bait shop and a covered shelter. Catches off the pier include a twelve pound Bluefish, a 5 foot Ribbon fish, 4 pound Pompano and 8 pound Black Drum

Folly Beach Sea Turtle Watch Program
Loggerhead turtles come to Folly between May and September to lay eggs and nest anywhere from 2-5 times a season. Although Folly does not have regularly scheduled activities, beginning May 15th you can watch the beach for crew members walking at high tide (5:30am-7am) and they will involve you in whatever there is to do.
